There are certain common qualities that all effective presenters have, whether it is an actual presentation or a briefing session. These qualities range from having a high level of communications skills, awareness and commitment, to promoting a positive approach and attitude. Sound preparation, planning and practice will enable you to stand up confidently and delivery your presentation with the right amount of force, energy and authority, ensuring that your audience acts as you intend.
Possible checklist:
• What is the specific topic to be presented, your “message” and objective?
• What is the size, composition and expertise of the audience?
• What do you anticipate is their likely reaction and why?
• What visual aids are you going to use?
• How are you going to establish credibility with this particular audience?
• What is the “hook”, the main benefit to them?
• What points have you to make and what evidence do you have to back them up?
• What extra backup information do you need to have available?
• What questions and/or interruptions do you anticipate?
• Is your language style appropriate?
• How are you going to ensure a positive last impression?
• What do you want your audience to do next?
• What “image” are you trying to project?
• What techniques are you going to use to cope with any nerves?
• What aspects of your physicality and vocality will you concentrate on?
• Have you carried out a full “dress” rehearsal to become familiar with content?
Remember that the content is meaningless without a good delivery so you need to be competent, dynamic and natural. You can do this by believing in yourself and knowing you are not alone in feeling how you feel! Overall, enjoyment is the key to success so get out there and “wow” them.
